Editorial Standards
How this publication researches its work, what it does when it gets something wrong, and what it tells you about its own interests.
In preparation
The commitments below are drafted and awaiting sign-off. They describe the standard this publication intends to hold itself to; treat them as a statement of intent until this notice is removed.
Sourcing and research
- Claims that rest on a document cite that document, and link to it where a public version exists.
- Primary sources are preferred to coverage of them. Where only secondary reporting is available, the piece says so.
- Figures name their origin and the date they were taken.
Review
- Every piece carries the name of whoever wrote it.
- Education carries the name of whoever reviewed it, the date of that review, and the audience it addresses.
Corrections and updates
- Corrections are logged on the piece they belong to, with the date and what changed. They are not made silently.
- A substantive revision is marked as such. A typographical fix is not, so that "updated" keeps its meaning.
Disclosure
- Relationships that could reasonably bear on a piece are disclosed on that piece.
- Where a subject is a client, a partner, or otherwise connected to the publication, the connection is stated.
